In Saxony, six universities provide specific bachelor’s and master’s programs of studies in the life science sector, for example, “Health Care Management” at the DIU – Dresden International University. High caliber interdisciplinary doctoral programs and graduate schools promote junior scientists – such as, for example, the doctoral program “IMPRS-CellDevoSys” (molecular cell biology, genetics) in Dresden or the graduate schools “BuildMoNa” (biomaterials) in Leipzig and “DIGS-BB” (biomedicine / bioengineering) in Dresden.

Dresden University of Technology

At Dresden University of Technology (TU Dresden), more than 3,000 students are educated at the Faculty of Medicine “Carl Gustav Carus” and in the specialized Department of biology at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The Biotechnology Center at Dresden University of Technology (BIOTEC) is a unique interdisciplinary center focusing on research and teaching in molecular bio-engineering. The BIOTEC hosts three international Master's programs in English - Molecular Bioengineering, Nanobiophysics, and Regenerative Biology and Medicine.

DIPP / IMPRS-CELLDEVOSYS / DIGS - BB

Dresden University of Technology’s Dresden International PhD Program (DIPP) trains and educates the best junior scientists in the scientific tracks Cell and Developmental Biology; Computational Biology; Biomedicine, Molecular Bioengineering, and Biophysics  as well as Regenerative Medicine and helps them earn their doctoral degree. That’s why the DIPP unites two strong partners – the International Max Planck Research School for Cell, Developmental and Systems Biology (IMPRS CellDevoSys) and the Dresden International Graduate School for Biomedicine and Bioengineering (DIGS BB). 

The International Max Planck Research School for Cell, Developmental and Systems Biology (IMPRS CellDevoSys) is a joint program launched by the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics (MPI CBG), the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems (MPI PKS), and Dresden University of Technology (TU Dresden). IMPRS DellDevoSys provides interdisciplinary education to excellent graduates from life, natural, and engineering sciences, computer science, physics, and applied mathematics. 

Over the past few years, the Dresden International Graduate School for Biomedicine and Bioengineering (DIGS BB) has evolved into a beacon among the international doctoral programs in Germany. The spectrum of research topics addressed by the interdisciplinary work groups ranges from the effectiveness of biomolecular motors to the development of tissues all the way to new regenerative therapies in medicine. Currently, about 250 junior scientists are working on their dissertation projects in more than 80 work groups.

DRESDEN INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY (DIU)

The private university Dresden International University (DIU) offers postgraduate education and advanced training. The DIU provides a truly "global" new master’s degree course called “Clinical Research.” Its special feature: The classroom is virtual. With the help of ultramodern live video conference technology, elite universities from around the globe impart the fundamentals of clinical research at the highest level. The course “PPCR Principles and Practice of Clinical Research,” for example, is created by the renowned Harvard Medical School. The University Hospital "Carl Gustav Carus" supports the students in Dresden. Furthermore the DIU offers the interdisciplinary master's program "Health Care Management" combining medical and economic topics.

Faculty of Medicine at Leipzig University

The Faculty of Medicine at Leipzig University is an educational establishment for over 3,000 students in human medicine and dentistry and is closely linked to the Leipzig University Hospital. The Faculty of Biosciences, Pharmacy and Psychology is home to various natural science disciplines. Within a total of 14 degree programmes approximately 2.000 students, as well as about 500 students pursuing a doctorate are educated and trained.

Graduate School “BuildMoNa” at Leipzig University

The Graduate School “Building with Molecules and Nano-Objects (BuildMoNa)” at Leipzig University focuses on innovative approaches in materials research which are imparted in an interdisciplinary manner to junior scientists. The concept follows the “bottom up” strategy applied in the development of new materials: Suitable building blocks, such as nanoparticles, smart molecules, polymeric scaffolds, peptides, and proteins, are combined – preferably via self-organization mechanisms – into new materials which are intelligent, adaptive, environmentally friendly, and inexpensive and which resemble living matter.
