Whether it be cost-efficient printed batteries from Chemnitz or the world’s most efficient organic semitransparent solar cells from Dresden which are used in architectural glass – Saxony’s researchers and entrepreneurs have taken the lead in developing “plastic” solutions for tomorrow’s lifestyle. Saxony is Europe’s largest cluster of organic and flexible electronics.

Europe’s largest cluster for organic and flexible electronics

With its 40 companies and 20 research facilities Saxony is Europe’s largest cluster for organic and flexible electronics. The region covers the entire value creation chain ranging from fundamental research all the way to finished products. For example, Saxony is the place the technological leaders in energy-efficient organic light-emitting diodes as well as the producers of the most efficient organic solar cells call home.

HELIATEK GMBH, DRESDEN

The global technology leader in the organic photovoltaics (OPV) sector, the Dresden-based Heliatek GmbH, is able to turn glass facades and panoramic cars roofs into energy collectors. With 6 percent, the company holds the world record in efficiency for flexible cells with a translucence of 50 percent. Initial pilot projects – for example, in China and Singapore – permitted Heliatek to successfully test the use of the Helia-Film® solar foil on building facades and roofs made of glass, concrete, and PVC membranes. HeliaFilm® is produced with a globally unique roll-to-roll process in Dresden. 

NOVALED GMBH, DRESDEN

The Novaled GmbH is a spin-off of Dresden University of Technology and a global leader when it comes to technologies which are required for the production of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The company holds about 500 patents. Since August 2013, the specialist for highly efficient OLED structures with long lifespans has been part of the South Korean Samsung Group.

CREAPHYS GMBH, DRESDEN

CreaPhys GmbH, a spin-off of the Dresden University of Technology, specializes in coating and material purification procedures during the production of organic thin films (for organic light-emitting diodes and solar cells). The company provides comprehensive knowledge and expertise in the organic optoelectronics sector. CreaPhys also develops and produces purifying systems for used organic substances.

3D-MICROMAC AG, CHEMNITZ

Located in Chemnitz, the 3D-Micromac AG has established itself as a leading provider of individual, customized laser micromachining workstations for industrial applications and for research purposes. They are used, for example, in systems for the production of photovoltaic modules and components as well as in semiconductor production, medical technology, and the digital production of printed functionalities. For example, machines made by 3D-Micromac permit the structuring of OLED’s anode layers or the structuring of organic solar cells. 

SMARTRAC TECHNOLOGY GMBH, DRESDEN

The Dresden-based SMARTRAC Technology GmbH is a member of the SMARTRAC Group which is a global leader in the development and production of RFID technology. In addition to standard products, the company also manufactures transponders and inlays according to specific customer requirements. These products are used for a wide range of applications, for example, passports and ID cards, mobile payment systems, public transportation, or electronic product identification. The corporate site in Dresden possesses extensive experiences and competences in flip-chip production and high end wafer technology as well as antenna and inlay design.
