New location for innovation and education in Dresden
In spring 2023, the property owner SachsenEnergie began renovating the old switchgear in the Kraftwerk Mitte building complex, and the construction site celebration for the planned high-tech incubator was held on September 22, 2025.
The switchgear is the penultimate building in the comprehensive revitalization of the Kraftwerk Mitte site from a disused industrial area to a vibrant center for art, culture and community.
The building has around 3,000 m² of office and meeting space, which is ideally suited to the requirements of co-working and new work. The space is complemented by two large event areas and a maker space that enables innovative ideas to be quickly turned into prototypes. In addition, spacious social areas are available on each floor to promote intensive interaction between the building's users. With this concept, Schaltanlage 30 will become an essential part of the Kraftwerk Mitte site, which is developing into a vibrant center for research, innovation and entrepreneurial collaboration.
In 2020, Dresden City Council unanimously approved the funding of 4.8 million euros in urban development funding for the renovation of the switchgear building at Kraftwerk Mitte. In future, the building will serve as an innovative location for start-up companies from Dresden's IT sector. After being used as a stage for art and music, SachsenEnergie began renovating the building in spring 2023. The total construction costs amount to around 15.45 million euros. The refurbishment is being supported with around 200,000 euros from the federal subsidy for energy-efficient buildings.
TechnologieZentrumDresden GmbH (TZD) will move into the new building as the future operator of the incubator. The TZD is a central institution for the support and development of technology-oriented companies in Dresden. TZD operates several specialized locations in Dresden and offers flexible office and laboratory space as well as workshops and clean rooms that are specially tailored to the needs of technology-driven companies. In addition to the infrastructure, tenants benefit from a strong network of universities, research institutions, investors and established industrial partners. TechnologieZentrumDresden sees itself as a bridge between science and business and primarily supports start-ups, spin-offs and companies in the development and implementation of innovative business ideas.
