"Silicon Saxony": Japanese Equipment Supplier Opens Competence Center
The semiconductor ecosystem in Saxony continues to grow: Mitutoyo Europe, the Japanese global market leader in precision measurement technology, has opened its new Semiconductor Competence Center at the Dresden-Süd Technology Center.
Mitutoyo’s decision to locate in Dresden demonstrates that the “Silicon Saxony” region is attracting the specialized suppliers and expertise that make up a high-performance semiconductor ecosystem. At the same time, the investment is further evidence of the growing ties between Saxony and Japan in the semiconductor sector.
Mitutoyo was founded in 1934 and is now active worldwide with approximately 5,900 employees and 43 group companies. The company manufactures the tools and machines that enable industry and research to measure with an accuracy of one-thousandth of a millimeter—ranging from classic calipers and micrometers to coordinate measuring machines as well as optical and surface measurement systems. This precision is a fundamental requirement for semiconductor manufacturing, where structures in the nanometer range are created.
Covering an area of approximately 300 m², the facility will house spaces for demonstrations, lectures, and training—with a clear focus on applications in the semiconductor industry. Proximity to Dresden’s fabs and suppliers, short distances for demonstrations and qualification, and a venue for lectures and continuing education—all of this strengthens the depth of Saxony’s value chain.
Saxony Trade & Invest Corp. (WFS) has supported Mitutoyo in developing the site and will continue to support the company.
At the same time, Saxony is continuously expanding its economic and technological ties with Japan — including through its presence at SEMICON Japan, business delegations, and joint initiatives with JETRO. Last week, around 50 representatives from Saxon and Japanese companies gathered at the Tech Innovation Challenge during the Silicon Saxony Days.
