Lusatia Region: Parachute Manufacturer SPEKON Breaks Ground on Expansion Project
The textile company Spekon Sächsische Spezialkonfektion GmbH in Seifhennersdorf (Görlitz district) is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of modern parachute systems. Since its production facilities have reached their physical limits, Spekon is modernizing and expanding its production space by the end of 2027.
The total investment amounts to 8.3 million euros, of which the German Federal State of Saxony is contributing 2.8 million euros. The funding comes from the federal-state program GRW-RIGA (Joint Task “Improvement of the Regional Economic Structure”). The construction project officially began on September 18 with a groundbreaking ceremony attended by Saxony’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Dirk Panter.
Founded in 1842, the company specializes in military, rescue, and sports parachute technology, aerospace textiles (e.g., safety nets, seat belts), temporary structures (e.g., tent systems), and technical textiles (e.g., brochure and newspaper holders in airplanes, trains, and buses). Spekon exports its products to more than 30 countries. Its customers include public sector clients, aviation and defense companies, as well as associations, clubs, and private customers involved in skydiving, gliding, and powered flight.
Spekon anticipates high growth potential in the coming years, particularly in the field of military parachutes. The expansion project is expected to secure over 40 jobs and two apprenticeship positions, as well as create one additional job.
