Germany's first "cow garden"
The first "cow garden" in Germany was inaugurated in June 2024. Dresdner Vorgebirgs Agrar AG is setting new standards in dairy farming with this innovative dairy barn for around 630 cows and 150 calves.
The approximately 10,000 square meter so-called Serrestall has a special roof construction and is open at the sides. This allows daylight and fresh air into the barn and reduces heat stress. The cows lie and walk in the free-range area on a "high wellfare floor", a floor that is soft and moisture-permeable. Urine and manure are separated immediately, reducing ammonia emissions. Planting islands improve the barn climate and support the well-being, health and performance of the cows. Robotic technology is used for milking, feeding and manure removal.
This barn is a forward-looking combination of animal welfare, digitalization, economic efficiency, climate protection and hygiene and thus makes an important contribution to supplying the population with food and to the development of rural areas. Here you can see the potential for innovation in Saxon agriculture.
The construction of the cow garden was funded by the German Federal State of Saxony with around 6.9 million euros via the "Agriculture, Innovation, Knowledge Transfer" funding guideline.
