Saxony possesses considerable industrial capacities and research potentials in the aerospace industry with a specific focus in the Dresden, Freiberg, and Chemnitz regions. Currently, more than 7,000 employees work in 160 companies and research institutions in Saxony’s aerospace sector. The industry sector is characterized by the Elbe Flugzeugwerke GmbH (a company of ST Engineering and Airbus) in Dresden and primarily small and medium-sized suppliers. Saxony’s companies are reliable partners of the major aircraft manufacturers and participate in largescale international projects. Companies from Saxony excel with specific competences and expertise in the sectors aircraft conversion and maintenance, materials development (particularly lightweight construction), aerospace electronics and communication systems, test and sensor technology, propulsion systems for space travel and electric aviation, plants for sustainable air fuels (SAF), astrophysics and geodata processing. Education and research in the aerospace technology sector is provided primarily by the Dresden University of Technology which sets global standards with its Institute for Aerospace Engineering (ILR) and Institute of Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology (ILK).
