More students at universities in Saxony
In the 2025 / 2026 winter semester, 107,636 students were enrolled at higher education institutions in the German Federal State of Saxony. That is 3.8 percent more than in the 2024 / 2025 winter semester. Women account for 49.6 percent of the student body.
In 2025, 24,698 people began their first year of higher education, an increase of 5,216, or 26.8 percent, compared to 2024. According to further data from the State Statistical Office of the State of Saxony, in the winter semester of 2025 / 2026, nearly one-third of all students (33,638) were enrolled in programs within the “Engineering” subject group, followed by programs in “Social and Behavioral Sciences, Sports” with more than 17 percent (18,653), and “Economics” with just under 13 percent (13,665).
In the 2025 / 26 winter semester, the proportion of international students at Saxon universities is 19.6 percent, slightly higher than in the previous year (19.5 percent). Most international students come from India (4,031), China (1,972), and Austria (1,579).
In the 2025 / 2026 winter semester, Saxony’s universities of applied sciences recorded an increase in student numbers compared to the previous year, rising by 4,507 to 30,813 students. The administrative universities of applied sciences recorded an increase of 51 to 1,833 students, and the art colleges saw an increase of 14 to a current total of 3,213 students. At the universities, the number of students decreased by 650 to 71,777 students.
