FERALPI STAHL Is Expanding Production Capacity at Its Riesa Facility
One year after the new spooler rolling mill began operations, FERALPI STAHL is moving forward with the expansion of its production capacity at the Riesa site. The goal is to increase steel production from the current level of approximately one million tons to up to 1.3 million tons per year.
This is driven by the ongoing ramp-up of the new spooler mill, through which the company is also introducing a new product for automated applications to the market. “With the new spooler rolling mill, we have created the conditions to take our production to a new level,” says Uwe Reinecke, General Manager of FERALPI STAHL. “The ramp-up is proceeding according to plan, the quality is right, and we are seeing the new product establish itself in the market.”
From Start-up to Full Operation
The spooler rolling mill was officially inaugurated on May 15, 2025. After starting with single-shift operation, the plant is now running in two-shift operation. Performance tests are continuing in parallel with production in collaboration with the plant manufacturer Danieli. The goal is to obtain the plant’s Final Acceptance Certificate this summer.
At the Riesa site, FERALPI STAHL already operates an existing rolling mill that currently produces around 850,000 tons of structural steel per year. The new spooler rolling mill adds additional capacity, which is being developed gradually as operations ramp up.
On the way to 1.3 million tons
In the long term, the new spooler rolling mill is expected to produce approximately 400,000 to 450,000 tons of spooler products annually. Overall, this will result in a prospective production capacity of up to 1.3 million tons of steel per year at the Riesa site. The planned transition to three-shift operation starting in 2027 will lay the groundwork for this. In addition to the ongoing ramp-up of the plant, this depends in particular on market demand trends. Furthermore, investments in scrap processing will continue.
The new Spooler rolling mill is part of a comprehensive investment program by the Feralpi Group totaling over 220 million euros at the Riesa site. In addition to the expansion of rolling capacities, this program also includes measures in scrap processing as well as in energy and infrastructure.
Technologically, the spooler rolling mill sets new standards: It operates with zero Scope 1 emissions and enables particularly energy-efficient production through the use of inductive processes.
