LinkedIn “Cities on the Rise 2026”: Leipzig Is Among the Top Ten Cities With the Fastest-Growing Professional Workforce
For the annual "Cities on the Rise" city ranking, the editorial team at LinkedIn News DACH identified the top ten German cities and regions with particularly dynamic job markets. Leipzig made the list for the first time.
It’s not just big cities and metropolitan areas that guarantee growth and progress. If you take a closer look, you’ll see that there are exciting career opportunities even outside of Berlin, Munich, or Hamburg. That’s when cities like Bremen, Heilbronn, or Leipzig come into focus: These are emerging growth centers — regions undergoing transformation and cities that are retaining talent rather than losing it.
The ranking is based on exclusive LinkedIn data that shows where companies are increasingly filling positions, where demand for skilled workers is rising, and where new talent is settling permanently. The list deliberately excludes major cities and includes metropolitan areas with fewer than one million LinkedIn members.
Furthermore, the ranking highlights which regions across the country are offering increasing career opportunities and which industries are driving growth: The defense industry is experiencing a tremendous upswing, benefiting cities like Bremen, for example. Artificial intelligence remains a key driver of innovation and future viability, a trend evident in Heilbronn, Heidelberg, and Karlsruhe. But life sciences, pharmaceuticals, environmental technology, and services are also fueling growth in many cities and municipalities. In addition to the strongest industries, the ranking also provides insights into the regions’ major employers and flexible work models.

“This is how Leipzig is developing—Leipzig excels in many areas: The digital association Bitkom recognized the city as one of the leading smart cities; Leipzig continues to distinguish itself as a major logistics hub in Germany and has also secured another flagship project with the C-Factory, a facility for the industrial production of CO₂-storing components made of carbon concrete. In Leipzig, too, the local university is setting important trends in research, for example with the recently opened Center for Scalable Data Analysis and Artificial Intelligence, ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig.”
