Chemnitz University of Technology: New Master’s Program in “Technology and Management in Semiconductor Manufacturing”

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at Chemnitz University, in collaboration with the Faculty of Economics, designed new, practice-oriented training programs tailored to the needs of the semiconductor industry.

The labor market situation in Germany is currently characterized by high demand for skilled workers in the technology and engineering sectors, particularly in the semiconductor industry. In the Saxon high-tech network Silicon Saxony alone, billions in investments have created a high demand for highly qualified graduates. The industry association anticipates an enormous increase in staffing needs—by about one-third—by 2030 to ensure the operation of new semiconductor plants in Saxony. Knowledge of semiconductor manufacturing, process integration, and factory management is particularly in demand. Against this backdrop, the Technical University of Chemnitz will launch the admission-free master’s program “Technology and Management in Semiconductor Manufacturing” in the winter semester of 2026/2027.

This application-oriented program is aimed in particular at students who have already earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, information technology, industrial engineering (with a focus on electrical engineering), physics, or a related field. “Over the course of four semesters, students will gain practical knowledge of the fundamentals of business and engineering, enabling graduates to prepare themselves optimally for the challenges of the industry. “The program was designed as a German-language program, though individual English-language modules are explicitly incorporated to make the program more practice-oriented,” says Prof. Dr. Bernhard Wunderle, Dean of Studies at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology for the master’s program “Technology and Management in Semiconductor Manufacturing.” The program combines traditional learning methods with innovative approaches, such as work in student project groups, to provide students with hands-on learning experiences.

In the first semester, students acquire fundamental knowledge of electrical engineering related to semiconductor components and technologies, as well as basic knowledge of economics. In the second and third semesters, two specialization tracks are added: Process Integration for Semiconductor Technologies and Semiconductor Factory Management.
