Dresden: Topping-Out Ceremony for the New Materials and Quantum Sciences Research Building
Ideal conditions for collaborative cutting-edge research on innovative quantum materials and semiconductor technologies: On September 1, the Leibniz Institute IFW Dresden and the ctd.qmat Cluster of Excellence at TU Dresden celebrated the topping-out ceremony for their new joint research building.
- High-tech laboratories, offices, and communication hubs
The building is being constructed on the Südvorstadt campus of the Dresden University of Technology (TUD) on Nöthnitzer Straße and will provide high-tech laboratories, offices, and communication hubs for researchers. Their work focuses on the research and design of novel materials, including those for energy-efficient quantum chips and highly sensitive quantum sensors. The completed building is scheduled to open in mid-2029. The construction costs, funded by the DGerman Federal State of Saxony and the federal government, amount to approximately 70 million euros.

Spanning more than 8,000 square meters, the facility will investigate the extraordinary properties that quantum materials exhibit under extreme conditions—such as ultra-low temperatures—and the potential this opens up for novel components. The goal is to develop quantum materials that enable new green energy technologies, energy-efficient electronics, or robust quantum bits. This will make the new building a hub for cutting-edge international quantum research.
From the outset, IFW Dresden, as the project owner, has been responsible for the planning, coordination, and construction of the joint research facility. IFW Dresden’s role as the building owner for a research facility shared with TUD is a unique model of collaboration between a non-university research institution and a university in Germany. The new building also creates space for the further development of existing collaborations and for new joint research initiatives between the two institutions.
