Construction Begins on Chemnitz University of Technology’s Carbon Lab Factory
Construction work on Chemnitz University of Technology’s Carbon Lab Factory in Boxberg will begin in mid-September. The facility will house an R&D infrastructure—unique in Europe—for the production of sustainable carbon fibers and their further processing into semi-finished textile products and plastic-based structural components.
In Boxberg, Upper Lusatia, the entire value chain—from carbon fiber production and textile processing to innovative high-performance components—will be consolidated at a single location.
The project is being financed with funds from the Coal Regions Investment Act (InvKG). Total construction costs amount to 34 million euros. In addition, there will be extensive user-specific equipment.
Construction site setup is scheduled to begin in mid-September so that work can start in late September or early October. Concrete work is planned to begin in November. The construction project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028, at which time it will be handed over to Chemnitz University of Technology.
Three interconnected industrial halls, a centrally located building wing to house the building services, and a compact laboratory and office area will be constructed. The materials, semi-finished products, and components produced will be tested in the laboratory and office area. In addition to the laboratories, this area will also house an open-plan office, a conference room, and the reception area. In Hall 1, carbon fibers will be produced in the future using the so-called “Black Line.” The carbon fibers will then be further processed into semi-finished textile products in Hall 2. Structural components will be manufactured from these semi-finished textile products in Hall 3.
