Silicon Crystals with a Long Tradition

Since 1996, Siltronic has invested more than 500 million euros into it's Freiberg plant to create one of the world's most modern production lines for 300 mm single crystals and 300 mm wafers.

Around 1,000 employees currently work at the Freiberg plant. The site dates back to VEB Spurenmetalle Freiberg, which was founded in 1957, and is one of the cradles of silicon production. The first silicon crystal was grown here in 1963, making the company one of the global pioneers in the success story of microelectronics.

Siltronic Freiberg is not only one of the most important employers in the region, but is also in close contact with the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, the oldest mining science university in the world.

In the fall of 2023, Siltronic inaugurated an extension to its crystal pulling hall. The new production area offers space for the latest generation of crystal pulling systems, which are used to produce silicon single crystals for wafer production under clean room conditions. A total of several hundred million euros was invested in the construction. With a usable area of 20,000 square meters, the extension is almost as large as three soccer pitches.
