Technologies for future digitalized and highly automated construction
The Construction Future Lab - CFLab for short - in Görlitz focuses on the core areas of digitalized construction and sets its sights on the future of innovative construction. The CFLab was founded in 2022 as a non-profit research and development institution by the Technical University of Dresden.
The founding members are five chairs from three faculties in the fields of construction management, applied computer science, drive technology, mechanical engineering and technical design. The team develops and investigates technologies for future digitalized and highly automated construction. The aim is to close the gap between basic university research and development to market maturity. In particular, the CFLab is also intended to be a point of contact for the numerous small and medium-sized companies in the construction industry that cannot afford their own research and development departments.
In March 2023, the CFLab received structural change funding of over 9.1 million euros for land acquisition, basic equipment with media, the purchase of project-related equipment for research work and for construction work and preparatory work on the site. On the occasion of the ground-breaking ceremony, Saxony's Minister of State for Infrastructure and Regional Development handed over a further funding decision amounting to 6.2 million euros from the Coal Regions Investment Act (InvKG).
The Construction Future Lab is a project in the field of research infrastructure in the Lusatian mining region that will be funded by the InvKG in the first funding period, from 2020 to 2026. With the latest notification, a total of 119 projects with a total of 946 million euros (only federal funds) have been approved and are being implemented in the Lusatian mining district. This means that the financial assistance from the first funding period has been fully committed in the Lusatian mining district. Around 304 million euros have been paid out so far (as of June 30, 2025). Following the historic coal compromise and the establishment of the Coal Regions Structural Strengthening and Investment Act in 2020, a first major milestone has thus been reached.
