"Silicon Saxony" - More Than Just Chips

June 2017 - The sensation is perfect: the technology group Bosch is building a new mega-fab to produce MEMS for applications in mobility and the Internet of Things. And the plant is not being built somewhere in Asia, but in Europe - in the heart of "Silicon Saxony": in Dresden!

GLOBALFOUNDRIES Fab 1 in Dresden is recognized worldwide as a world-class semiconductor production facility. With a total investment of more than 12 billion US dollars and around 3,200 employees, the Dresden fab is one of the largest international investments in Europe.

Infineon Dresden was founded in 1994 – at the time still part of Siemens. Today, Dresden is one of the most modern and largest Infineon sites. In 2022, the Group announced further expansion - the largest single investment in the company's history at around 5,000 million euros.

August, 2023: The globally active Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer TSMC has announced its intention to build a wafer factory in Saxony's state capital Dresden together with Bosch, Infineon and NXP.

Since 1996, Siltronic has invested more than 500 million euros into it's Freiberg plant to create one of the world's most modern production lines for 300 mm single crystals and 300 mm wafers.

Freiberger Compound Materials GmbH (FCM) is the only supplier of GaAs wafers made from crystals produced using two different technologies (VGF, LEC).

The memory chip company FMC from Dresden wants to close a gap in European semiconductor value creation, give AI applications a boost, and significantly reduce the energy requirements of modern data centers. At the heart of this is a revolutionary new storage technology.
