LIFE SCIENCES! - Biotechnology, Medical Technology, Pharmaceutical Industry

Saxony is one of Germany’s most dynamic life science regions today. In particular, vibrant clusters are emerging primarily around the technology centers BIO CITY LEIPZIG and BioInnovationCenter Dresden.

Saxony is one of Germany’s most dynamic life sciences regions. A specific focus is on innovative therapies in regenerative medicine. Physicians at Europe’s unique "Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD)," for example, are studying the "axolotl" salamander to find out how organs and limbs can be regrown.

Even more good ideas come to life in the minds of Saxony’s researchers and entrepreneurs.

At a Glance - Life Sciences in Saxony

Saxony has invested one billion euros and twenty years into developing the region into a very special and, above all, an exceptionally dynamic life sciences location. More than 300 commercial enterprises and 30 research institutions with about 200 work groups and 15,500 employees from 40 countries are working on innovative solutions for human health here today.

The hotbed for Saxony’s life sciences branch is the pharmaceutical industry. What began with August Lingner and the mouthwash “ODOL” in the late 19th century became known as the Sächsisches Serumwerk Dresden vaccine factory later. Today, the company is a corporate site of GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals and produces influenza vaccines for the global market. Saxony’s medical technology is also steeped in tradition and accounts for about 70 % of the life sciences branch in the region.

Today, Saxony is also considered to be a national center of excellence for cell and gene therapies as well as regenerative medicine. And Saxony’s cancer research has gained international renown and repute, too – when it comes to both early diagnosis and innovative treatments. Thanks to the traditionally strong branch expertise in Saxony which is also available in the sectors micro and nano electronics, sensor technology, 5G mobile communication as well as 3D printing technology, Saxony’s life sciences branch develops growing competences for applications in the smart medical sector. Whether it be in the fields of telemedicine, point-of-care diagnostics, computer-assisted surgery, or health care robots – interdisciplinary knowledge is an important success factor for the entire branch.

Alive and Kicking

The about 300 companies committed towards biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and medical technology focus on the fields of regenerative medicine (e.g. tissue engineering), diagnostics, molecular bioengineering, bioinformatics, long-term monitoring as well as implants and prostheses.

In Saxony, six universities provide specific bachelor’s and master’s programs of studies in the life science sector, for example, “Health Care Management” at the DIU – Dresden International University. High caliber interdisciplinary doctoral programs and graduate schools promote junior scientists – such as, for example, the doctoral program “IMPRS-CellDevoSys” (molecular cell biology, genetics) in Dresden or the graduate schools “BuildMoNa” (biomaterials) in Leipzig and “DIGS-BB” (biomedicine / bioengineering) in Dresden.

With the Saxonian Incubator for Clinical Translation (SIKT) in Leipzig and the Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD), two leading research centers for regenerative medicine are located in Saxony. In addition, three interdisciplinary innovation centers – B CUBE Dresden (molecular bioengineering), ICCAS Leipzig (computer-assisted surgery), and OncoRay Dresden (medical radiation research) – are also active in the region.

We support Saxony.

Prof. Dr. Frank Buchholz

Professorship for Medical Systems Biology, University Hospital Dresden

"The Medical Faculty at the University Hospital Dresden is the youngest of its kind in all of Germany. Perhaps that’s the reason why there’s such a strong team spirit here. Since I moved with my family from San Francisco to Dresden in 2002, the research landscape has developed considerably in an international comparison – which is also due to the numerous excellence clusters found here."

A Salamander as Research Director - The Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD)

More than 300 axolotls live in the amphibian breeding plant at the Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD) at Dresden University of Technology. By researching these masters of regeneration, it is possible to discover how precisely the replaced limbs are regrown.
