Saxony possesses considerable industrial capacities and research potentials in the aerospace industry with a specific focus in the Dresden, Freiberg, and Chemnitz regions. Currently, approximately 6,800 employees work in 160 companies of Saxony’s aerospace industry. The biggest company of the sector in Saxony is the Elbe Flugzeugwerke GmbH (EFW) – a company of the ST Aerospace and Airbus Groups – in Dresden. Saxony’s strong industrial base with the core branches automobile, machine and plant construction, microelectronics / ICT, and environmental technology offers great potential for logistics services. The Saxon locations of such globally active corporations as Volkswagen, BMW, and Porsche; GLOBALFOUNDRIES and Infineon; Bombardier Transportation and NILES-SIMMONS-HEGENSCHEIDT are at the heart of and the starting point for multifaceted and highly efficient supply and distribution chains. This is not the only reason why virtually all top 20 European logistics enterprises have set up their business in Saxony. Among them are the market leader Deutsche Post DHL as well as Kühne + Nagel, CEVA, DSV, and Dachser.

On the Right Track

In 1839, Germany’s first long-distance rail line was officially inaugurated between Leipzig and Dresden. In the opening ceremony participated not only British locomotives, but also the first locomotive built in Germany, the “Saxonia”. This locomotive was manufactured by the “Maschinenbau-Anstalt Übigau” in the vicinity of Dresden. The “Saxonia” proved its worth with regard to its pulling power, speed, fuel consumption, and reliability. This marked the start of the success story of Saxony’s railway technology branch which can look back on 175 years of history today.
